KERALA, INDIA
"God's Own Country"

kerala.jpg

This page is about Kerala, a small state in India often called- Gods Own Country. Kerala is a small state, tucked away in the south west corner of India. It represents only 1.18% of the total area of India but 3.43% of the total population of the country is in Kerala. This state, well known for its greenery, backwaters, and beaches is, in my opinion, one of the prettiest in India. One of the main subjects on this page is the town of Cochin, in Kerala. It is on the edge of the state, and one of the many seaport towns in India.

Cochin, India
This lush Kerala region is a land of incense and myrrh. The world has found many exotic spices here. The aromas of ginger, cloves, cardamom, cumin and other key ingredients of Indian curries fill the air. Not far from Mattancheri Palace, is a Jewish colony dating back to 1000 A.D. Cochin is one of India's many ports. It is located right on the edge of Kerala, by the Indian ocean.

Origin of 'Cochin'
Cochin, or Kochi - The Queen of the Arabian Sea, has several versions to the origin of its name. Kochi could have been derived from the word 'Cochzi', meaning small sea, or 'Kaci' meaning harbour in Tamil. Other ideas are that Cochin was named after China.

Location

Cochin (Kochi), the "Queen of the Arabian Sea", is situated on the west coast of India in the beautiful state of Kerala. Kochi can be regarded as the commercial and industrial capital of Kerala. Kerala is one of the most prosperous state of India. Kochi is the most important city in Kerala.
